Description:

Good content war-date A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Fort McHenry, Sep. 20, 1862, Eldridge Franklin of the 5th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Company "C", to his father. Franklin, stationed in Baltimore while recovering from wounds received during the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31, comments on the capture of Harpers Ferry and the recent Battle of Antietam, concluded just three days before. In part: "...The recent battles in Maryland it seems have resulted more favorable to us than usual although we have gained nothing. The enemy has been compelled to leave Maryland but our loss at Harpers Ferry is not balanced by our success in Maryland. I had hopes the enemy would be annihilated but it seems by today's paper that they have escaped into Virginia. You may imagine what our anxiety was when we received news that a battle was then raging. Everything goes on as usual here in the camp of convalescents..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with the original transmittal envelope present. Very good.
