Description:

MEXICO PREPARES FOR WAR WITH TEXAS
A historic and rare printed circular, 1p. legal folio, Ciudad Victoria [Tamaulipas], Dec. 8, 1835, in Spanish on Gobierno Del Departamento de Tamaulipas letterhead, a call by governor Jose Antonio Fernandez for volunteers-in-arms to join Santa Anna's march against the Texans who were then in full revolt. Fernandez describes the combined Anglo-Tejano revolt as an illegal action by "...los indignos colonos...", and asks for a thousand men to fall under the banner of General Francisco Vital Fernandez to defend the honor of Mexico alongside Santa Anna. Both Fernandez and his secretary add their paraphs under their printed signatures. Texas inhabitants first staged violent revolt in October of 1835, and signed a prototype declaration of independence by Dec. 20, 1835. Many scholars concur that the likely printer of this circular is Samuel Bangs, as he lived in Victoria at the time and printed the government's Colección de Leyes y Decretos de la Primera Legislatura Constitucional del Estada Libre de Tamaulipas. Toning at lower-right, otherwise very good.
