Description:

MEXICANS RETREAT AT NUEVO LEON
COL. FRANCISCO GONZALEZ PAVON A.L. secretarially-signed, 2pp., folio, Meir, Tamaulipas, Nov. 11, 1838. An unsigned manuscript copy in Spanish reporting on the disastrous retreat of Gonzalez Pavon at Nuevo Leon, stamped "Secreteria de Gobierno del Departamento de Nuevo Leon" at top left corner. Though Anglo Texans won independence from Mexico in 1836, skirmishes and battles over adjacent cities continued until the Mexican-American War in 1846. Here, Federalist Texans collaborating with Colonel Antonio Canales prepared to storm Mier, defended by Gonzalez Pavon and his first regiment of Cavalry; Gonzalez Pavon fled with troops and artillery to Monterrey, and the Texans pursued. Later, in October 1839, at the Battle of Alcantra, Col. Francisco González Pavón commanded the Centralist troops that occupied the Mexican Rio Grande border town of Mier. The following morning Pavón and the Centralist forces, without water, tried to move towards a source of water but were cut off by the Texans. After a brief skirmish, Pavón surrendered, for which the Mexican government court-martialed him. Minor folds, else very good.
