Description:

(MEXICAN WAR)
Superb association war-date A.L.S., "Fred Probst", 1p., 4to., New York, Jan. 20, 1864, a letter from Frederick Probst, head of Beaver Street commission house F. Probst & Co., to Colt Firearms, requesting advice on how to ship an order of Colt guns to Mexico. In part: "We have just received from the West Coast of Mexico, the following small order... which we should be glad to execute; but in view of the existing, stringent laws, regarding exportations of arms from this country, we are uncertain how to act in this matter...". In 1864, Mexico was in full-blown conflict with an invading Austro-French force that had installed Maximilian on the throne. It is unclear whether the order of Colt arms was placed by the Mexican or French forces. Moderate folds with small separations and missing paper at several, very good.
