Description:

MEXICAN SERVICE BLACK SOLDIER'S MEDAL GROUPING
A terrific grouping of medals and insignia belonging to Pvt. Chester Garrett, Co. F, 24th Infantry Regiment, one of the Buffalo Soldier regiments. It was organized on 1 November 1869 from the 38th U.S. (Colored) Infantry Regiment and the 41st U.S. (Colored) Infantry Regiment.? All the enlisted soldiers were black, either veterans of the U.S. Colored Troops or freedmen. The 22 medals, badges, and insignia belonging to Garret are mounted upon a 7 x 9.75 in. board with green felt covering and yellow stitching at the edges. The group is identified to its owner by the Mexican Service Medal No. 9947 which was issued to Pvt. Chester Garrett, Co. F, 24th Infantry. Included are: a World War I Victory Medal (no bars); a 'Crack Squad' medal; a nice Mexican Border souvenir badge; a matched pair of US/24 & Infantry 'F' collar disks; a matched pair of US/25 & Infantry disks; a matched pair of US & unassigned collar disks; two early large US Eagle hat badges; three screw post 24th Infantry DIs; a 25th Infantry DI and inexplicably, a DI of the 18th Field Artillery Regiment (Composite School troops), perhaps from a segregated battery within unit, qualification badges, etc. All the insignia are period, from 1910 to the '20s, and are all screw post. A rare grouping from an important unit.
