Description:

MEXICAN OFFICER FORESEES WAR WITH TEXAS
Fine content A.L.S. "J.M. Guerra", 4pp. 4to., stamped "COMANDANCIA PRAL DE TAMAULIPAS" at top, Matamoros, Nov. 9, 1839, in Spanish discussing Mexico's impending war with the Texas colonists. In part: "...The ungrateful colonists of Texas were in a position to scoff at the laws of the Mexican nation...they returned to their aggressions, running the most scandalous contraband along the entire shore of Texas...The colonies of Texas for some time have been considered as a general headquarters for enemies of the nation...they aspire to shamelessly grab a part of our most precious territory...Call your troops that they prepare for this foreign war, to reproduce brilliantly the proof that they are invincible...". Guerra, a direct descendant of Rio Grande settlers who formed the city of Matamoros, provides an interesting commentary on the Mexican belief that the Republic of Texas would soon be owned by the United States via a revolution, due in part to France's recognition of Texas in September of 1839. When the U.S. annexed a willing Republic of Texas in 1844, Mexico under Santa Ana declared war. Moderate show-through of ink, small separations at folds, else very good.
