Description:

A scarce piece of military headgear, a circa-1900 "pickelhaube"-style parade helmet worn by officers of the Mexican Life Guard Cuirassier Regiment, constructed of nickel-plated iron. The helmet features a brass plate in the form of a highly detailed Mexican eagle at front, secured within by strands of leather through half-rings, and is crowned with a 7 in. brass spike with a cruciform base plate. A black leather chin strap protected by brass scales is affixed over the front visor by a lug on each side, with the right-hand lug also displaying a red, gold and green cockade, and with the brass regimental number "2" over the left-hand lug. The edges are trimmed with strips of brass, with the edge of the front visor marked "2 114", with the first numeral turned perpendicularly to the rest, while the rear edge is marked "57.5". No other markings are present. The interior of both visors is coated with black paint to reduce glare, and the liner is absent. Shows slight verdigris to the brass fittings, with one nut securing the spike missing, else very good.
