Description:

MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR PRINTS
Good lot of three color lithograph prints, each depicting a scene from the Mexican-American war of 1846-1848, includes: Hand-colored lithograph print, 13 1/2" x 9 3/4" (sight), printed by Kelloggs & Thayer of New York in 1846, entitled "The Death of Major Ringgold". The print depicts American artillery major SAMUEL B. RINGGOLD (1796-1846), being removed from his horse by comrades after receiving grievous wounds to both legs at the May 8, 1846 Battle of Palo Alto, part of the Mexican-American War. In the background, American infantry and artillery advance, as dead and wounded Mexican soldiers lie in the foreground. Ringgold''s use of his artillery to lead the attack against Mexican forces enabled his forces to win the battle, at the cost of Ringgold''s life. He would be the first American officer to die during the war. The print is mounted in a vintage frame, and shows minor toning overall, with some slight fading of the colors, else very good. WITH: Hand-colored lithograph print, 13" x 9" (sight), printed by Nathaniel Currier of New York in 1847, entitled "General Taylor Never Surrenders". The print depicts Mexican general Santa Anna''s messengers approaching general and future president ZACHARY TAYLOR (1784-1850) to unsuccessfully request his surrender prior to the Battle of Buena Vista, which resulted in a resounding American victory. The print is mounted in a vintage frame and shows toning throughout, with some damp stains visible, else very good. WITH: Hand-colored lithograph print, 13" x 9" (sight), printed by Nathaniel Currier of New York in 1847, entitled "Battle of Buena Vista". The print depicts the effective use of artillery by the American forces against the much larger Mexican Army, which helped to secure victory. The print lists the size of each army, along with the casualties suffered by each, further underscoring the effectiveness of the American tactics. The print is mounted in a vintage frame, and shows notable toning throughout, with some minor damp stains visible near the bottom edge, else very good. Three pieces.
