Description:

Good pair of copper souvenir ashtrays, both commemorating the World War I German cargo-carrying U-boat DEUTSCHLAND, the first merchant submarine, which successfully ran the British naval blockade twice to conduct publicity cruises to the United States in 1916. Includes: rectangular 7" x 5" ashtray presenting a full-length depiction of the Deutschland, with the inscription "Made From Ex German Submarine "DEUTSCHLAND" Broken Up By Robert Smith & Sons Birkenhead', indicating that it is constructed from copper removed from the boat during her scrapping postwar. Fitted with a hanging wire at the top edge, shows slight verdigris in the crevices, else very good. WITH: a second circular 5 1/2" ashtray presenting a stylized view of the submarine, otherwise unmarked by possibly constructed of copper from the same source. Also very good. Tragically, the Deutschland suffered and explosion during her scrapping, killing five Robert Smith & Sons employees. These pieces were collected together in Britain during the 1970's. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
