Description:

Most interesting bound manuscript, 59pp. 7" x 8", memorializing Captain Henry Enoch Cockerham of Company I of the 16th Regiment Louisiana Infantry. The manuscript abounds with extremely heartfelt and flowery praise for Capt. Cockerham, executed by at least three hands. The opening page states that Cockerham died in Tupelo, Mississippi on July 23, 1862, and a later page gives additional detail: "...After escaping unhurt though the battle of Shiloh, he passed calmly away from this life by the hand of disease... His death slumber was watched by faithful friends and comrades, whose every attention rendered him as comfortable as a camp death could be. He now lies on the lonely plain of Corinth, his grave unmarked and unknown, no shroud but his soldier's blanket..." The primary writer appears to be Cockerham's sister Felicia, who uses the space to respond to several of her brother's letters, which were delayed until the end of the Civil War. Much of the remaining space is filled with poetry and Bible verses, and several printed examples cut for newspapers have been pasted inside the covers. The covers are detached at the spine and two signatures of pages within are detached, else very good and perfectly legible. Also present are seven mimeographed pages reproducing muster rolls, pay vouchers and other period documents related to Cockerham.
