Description:

War-date letter of Union Pvt. Elbridge Franklin, Co. C, 5th Michigan Infantry, 8pp. 8vo., "Camp Lyon", Va., Oct. 19, 1861 to his brother. In small part: "...the last week at hard work on fortifications without tents, exposed to the weather...the entire brigade consists of the New York 37th & 3 Michigan Regiments...we look down on Alexandria & the house where the gallant Ellsworth was killed...nine miles farther on the opposite side we see the Capital...the Government must have an immense army on the Potomac...soldiers are willing & anxious to meet the enemy...there are many reckless men...attributable to their desire & willingness to meet the traitors to our Government...The drums called us up at 3 in the morn...we received countermanding orders..." Franklin then describes some of his officers for whom he shows great respect and admiration, mentions an expedition made by the 2nd and 3rd Michigan, and mentions hearing that the Potomac had been closed by the rebels: "...we heard cannonading down the river Thursday night...some movement will no doubt shortly be made by us..." A few fold splits and some soiling.
