Description:

MELVYN DOUGLAS
(1901 - 1981) American actor. Douglas came to prominence in the 1930s as a suave leading man, typified by his performance in the 1939 romantic comedy Ninotchka with Greta Garbo. Fine content T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Dec. 4, 1941...three days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Douglas defends his country, writing in part: "...I am primarily interested in the safety of America --- America as a nation and America as a way of life...should Russia and England be defeated, America would be in very real danger...and would have to face that danger alone...our entire moral, economic and military force should be used to help destroy the thing that threatens us...everything I possess, including my life, is at the service of the country..." Very good. Douglas served in World War I and in the next war, he rose to the rank of major. It was in Burma when he first met his future "Being There" co-star Peter Sellers, who was serving in the RAF.
