Description:

(1833 - 1910) Chief Justice of the Supreme Court 1888-1910, who figured prominently in the U.S. v. E.C. Knight Company which significantly limited the powers of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. T.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Washington D.C., May 24, 1906, to Mr. Butler. In part: '...I notice that under the Constitution of the American Society of International Law, 'a limited number of persons not citizens of the United States...may be elected to honorary membership...it would have been wise to permit the election of more than one...' He then adds a lengthy postscript recommending a Lord Alverstone to be in charge. Expertly inlaid to a sheet, else fine. The American Society of International Law was founded that same year with the goal of promoting the establishment and maintenance of international relationships of law and justice. Richard Webster, 'Lord Alverstone' (1842-1915) was a British politician and judge who served in multiple political and judicial offices
