(b. 1958) Turkish assassin who murdered a left-wing journalist and later shot and wounded Pope John Paul II on 13 May 1981, after escaping from a Turkish prison. After serving 19 years of imprisonment in Italy where he was visited by the Pope, he was deported to Turkey, where he served a ten-year sentence. In 2007, he converted to Roman Catholicism and was released from prison on 18 January 2010. Rare A.N.S. in pencil on the verso of a paper Christmas card, written from prison in Rome, Jan. 5, 1984: 'With the wishes of a happy new year'. He prints his name and signs beneath. Very good, with the Italian transmittal envelope and a letter of provenance from the recipient, a Canadian collector well known to us.
