Description:

MEDIEVAL DOCUMENT WITH BEAUTIFUL LEAD SEAL FROM POPE CLEMENT XI
A handsome medieval document from the time of Pope Clement XI (not signed), 1p. oblong 4to. (12" x 7"), unidentified and untranslated, but likely a vidimus. Penned in a fine hand and bearing the attached beautiful heavy lead seal adorned with two heads of bearded gentlemen and the initials "S.P." on recto, with "CLEMENS PAPA XI" imprinted on verso. Pope Clement XI, Giovanni Francesco Albani (1649 – 1721), became Pope in 1700. Despite his apparent neutrality in the midst of the War of Spanish Succession, Clement named Charles, Archduke of Austria, as King of Spain, unfolding a wave of repercussions from the Bourbons which went on for years. Additionally, Clement is remembered for essentially destroying Christianity in China, and also for establishing the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary as a major church holiday. Folds and a small hold at middle, else very good condition, nice for display.
