Description:

CHARLES DUVAL ROBERTS (1873 -1966) Highly decorated American Brigadier General, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for valor in action on July 1, 1898 near El Caney, Cuba during the Spanish-American War, when he assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the lines under heavy fire. He commanded the famous 1st Infantry Division and completed his career in 1937 as Commanding General, Washington Military District. His white mess dress uniform, 1921 Pattern, of the period in which Colonel Roberts was promoted to brigadier general. The uniform is closed by two brass buttons bearing the United States emblem, though one button has since fallen off and been restitched to the garment. The original small fake gold chain, needed to connect to these two frontal buttons together, is also not present. The chest bears two rows of three decorative buttons running the length of each side. The shoulders bear the required, slip-on Model 1902 officer's gold braid epaulettes, identical in style, make, model to earlier genuine examples. Each sleeve has the correct width braid for the rank of a general at the cuffs, with a single star insignia being embroidered above for the rank of a brigadier general. The stars have been very crudely embroidered, suggesting it was undertaken by a non-professional. The inside of the garment is partially lined with an odd inner pocket added, not always found on these mess dress uniforms. Sold with the matching vest, definitely of an earlier style, made out of the exact same material as the jacket. The vest bears two outer vest pockets, a fairly rare addition. The rear center seam of the vest bears Robert's hand-inked initials 'CDR', and one of the vest's inner pockets has the lightly hand-inked inscription: 'Col. C.D. Roberts 1928'. The whole uniform has supposedly been cleaned due to previous heavy staining. Just good condition, yet presents well. Following the Battle of El Caney, Roberts participated in the Siege of Santiago a few days later. He later took part in combat in Northern Luzon during the Philippine-American War, the United States occupation of Veracruz, and then served in the St. Die sector during World War I. Sold with hundreds of pages of research. From a major private collection on public display.
