Description:

MEDAL GROUPING OF CAPT. EDWARD A. WALTON, 369TH INFANTRY 'HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS'
Very important World War I medal grouping of Capt. EDWARD A. WALTON, a company commander in the 369th Infantry Division, better known as the 'Harlem Hellfighters'. Walton's medals include: Distinguished Service Cross named to him while with the 369th on reverse; a Mexican Border Service Medal; a World War I Victory Medal with clasps for 'CHAMPAGNE-MARNE', AISNE-MARNE', MEUSE-ARGONNE', and 'DEFENSIVE SECTOR'; State of New York Conspicuous Service Medal made by Tiffany, named to Walton; State of New York Mexican Service Medal; State of New York World War I Service Medal; Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star; and French Medal for the Volunteers of the Great War with clasp: 'Engage Volontaire' for voluntary enlistment. The medals are presented in a burgundy felt-lined custom-fitted wood shadow box frame with chain hanger. Very good to fine. Walton received his D.S.C. after he escorted his battalion commander 100 yards in advance of his assaulting lines. The commander was struck six times in the legs and was carried by Walton to safety while under heavy heavy fire, in which Walton too was wounded. The 'Harlem Hellfighters' are one of the most recognized regiments in history. During World War I, the 369th spent 191 days in front-line trenches, more than any other American unit. They also suffered the most losses of any American regiment, with 1,500 casualties. The U.S. Army decided on 8 April 1918 to assign the unit to the French Army for the duration of American participation in the war because many white American soldiers refused to fight with African-Americans. The regiment would soon outperform both French and American units in the field, taking heavy losses in the process.
