MEADE FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS (18)
GEORGE G. MEADE (1815-1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War. A large collection of family photographs once belonging to RICHARD W. MEADE III (1837-1897), a second cousin on the general. Richard served on the steam frigate Merrimack in 1856-1857 and off Africa in 1857-1859. Promoted to lieutenant in 1858, he served in the Pacific Squadron during 1859-1861. During the Civil War, he participated in the suppression of the July 1863 New York draft riots and was active in blockade enforcement work while commanding the Mississippi River ironclad Louisville and the gunboats Marblehead in South Carolina and Chocura in the Gulf of Mexico. Captain Meade was Commandant of the Washington Navy Yard in 1887-1890, promoted to Commodore in 1892 and Rear Admiral two years later. The grouping includes 15 tintypes, cartes de visite, and cabinet photographs, eight showing Meade, others showing family members including one cabinet photo of his father-in-law, Union admiral HIRAM PAULDING. Overall, very good. 18 pcs.
