Description:

ME-410 BULLET-HOLED AIRCRAFT PANEL
A portion of the fuselage of an Me-410 aircraft, 48 x 15 in. aluminum, still bearing substantial green paint on exterior and interior including strengthening ribs. This aircraft section, cut with an acetylene torch from the aircraft long ago, bears two prominent bullet holes at about the center of the panel. A great relic from one of the scarcer German aircraft. The Messerschmitt Me-410 Hornisse (Hornet) was a German heavy fighter and Schnellbomber. Though an incremental improvement on the Me-210, it had a new wing plan, longer fuselage and more powerful engines. They were moderately successful against unescorted bombers through 1943, with a considerable number of kills against USAAF day bomber formations being achieved. However, the Me-410 was no match in a dogfight with the lighter Allied single-engine fighters such as the P-51 Mustang and the Spitfire.
