Description:

ME-109 CRASH RELIC FROM THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
Large, substantial twisted section of aluminum fuselage from a German Me-109 downed during the epic Battle of Britain. The torn and twisted relic measures approx. 18 in. x in. 12 x 7 in. and is mounted to a stained wood base with a small fitting also taken from the crash site. The wreckage bears an attribution stamped in ink onto the metal, in full: '3/IG 53 FUSELAGE FROM BF 109 SHOT DOWN BY RAF ON SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 1940 CRASHED NORHEADS FARM BIGGIN HILL KENT PILOT OBLT HASSE [sic, Haase] STAFFEL KAPITAN, NR. 1500'. From the decades-old collection of the British owner of a small aviation museum. September 15, 1940 was the most momentous day of the Battle of Britain, as the entire RAF was called out to defend the country. Around 1,500 aircraft took part in the air battles, which lasted until dusk. RAF Fighter Command defeated the German raids; the Luftwaffe formations were dispersed by a large cloud base and failed to inflict severe damage on the city of London. In the aftermath of the raid, Hitler postponed Operation Sea Lion. This particular aircraft was shot down by Flight Sergeant G.C. Unwin of 19 Squadron and Flying Officer A.D. Nesbitt of 1 (RCAF) Squadron during combat over London at 1250 hrs. The aircraft crashed at Mullard Wood, Biggin Hill. Oberlt J. Haase baled out and was killed as his parachute failed to open. An evocative, important relic, fine for display.
