139. JAMES B. MCPHERSON (1828 - 1864) Union major general who fought in Grant's Tennessee campaigns, let the right wing at Vicksburg, and was killed in battle at Atlanta. Pre-war partly-printed D.S. "Jas. B. McPherson" adding rank as witness on a quartermaster roll for the second quarter of 1854, 1p. folio, [New York Harbor, June 1854], for "Company A Engineers", in part: "...We...acknowledge to have received...the several articles...set opposite our respective names...". Worthy of further research since many of the soldiers no doubt served in the Civil War. Usual lightly toned folds, a couple of pin holes thereon, a few tiny marginal chips, else very good. $400 - 500
