328. ANTHONY MCAULIFFE (1898-1975) American Army general who held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, remembered for his reply to a German surrender ultimatum, "Nuts!" S.P. 6" x 8" b/w, a fine chest, up pose in uniform, signed in blue ballpoint at bottom. "ff" descenders slightly blurred, else very good, sold with an original 6" circular brass plaque, shows in high relief two soldiers, one German handing a surrender demand to his American counterpart who stands beneath an American flag, the town of Bastogne in the background and the legend "NUTS" above them, dated "DEC 44" engraved at bottom. The medal, engraved in Gouvin, Belgium, is made from the remains of German artillery and tanks and was given to members of the 101st Airborne command. Both items are matted in blue and framed. $400-500
