Description:

MAYNARD CARBINE
Fine Maynard "second model" cavalry carbine, 20" barrel, 36 3/4" overall, chambered for .52 caliber ammunition. The carbine is a breech-loading lever action; depressing the lever "breaks" the breech, allowing a round to be inserted. The hammer is then cocked separately, with a percussion cap inserted by hand. The carbine is marked on the left side of the frame: "Edward Maynard Patentee May 27, 1851 Dec. 6, 1859", with the right side stamped: "Manufactured by Mass. Arms Co. Chicopee Falls". The bottom tang, behind the trigger, is marked: "1865", with the serial number "22948". A pair of cartouches on the left side of the stock bear the initials "G.W.S." and "J.M." The barrel is blued throughout, and the frame bears a mottled grey surface, with some pitting apparent to both, but no active rust. The bore is mostly bright, with some old grime apparent, but with sharp rifling and no apparent pitting. A saddle ring is affixed to the left side of the frame. The lock is very strong, and cocks and fires properly. These carbines were used by both sides during the Civil War, and they were extremely popular with Confederate soldiers due to their brass cartridge, which could be reloaded up to 100 times. It had a good reputation for long-range accuracy, and was used extensively by sharpshooters.
