MAXIMILIEN DE ROBESPIERRE (1758 - 1794) French revolutionary and leader of the Montagnards, he brought on the Reign of Terror, sending his friends Desmoulins and Danton to the guillotine. Arrested in the Revolution of 9 Thermidor, he attempted suicide, wounded himself, and was finally carted off to the guillotine. Manuscript D.S. on the letterhead of the "Committee of Public Safety of the National Convention, Bureau of Fabrication of Special Weapons" letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Paris, Nov. 3, 1793. Robespierre authorizes "Citizen Genty" to requisition from the guard or otherwise any necessary scaffolding and cordage needed to construct covers for vessels under construction for the defense of the country. Boldly signed "Robespierre" at conclusion. Robespierre was near the height of his power, and would launch his "Reign of Terror" against his adversaries within a few short months. Also signed by LAZARE CARNOT (1753-1823), French politician known as the "Organizer of Victory" in the French Revolutionary Wars. Carnot was elected to the National Convention in 1792. He spent the last few months of 1792 on a mission to Bayonne, organizing the military defense effort in an attempt to ward off any possible attacks from Spain. Upon returning to Paris, Carnot voted for the death of King Louis XVI, although he had been absent for the debates surrounding the king's trial. On 14 August 1793 Carnot was elected to the Committee of Public Safety, where he took charge of the military situation as one of the Ministers of War.
