MAXIMILIAN (1832 - 1867) Emperor of Mexico who, with the support of French forces, drove Juarez across the northern frontier, yet had the tables turned on him when French removed their forces. Condemned and executed. Partly-printed D.S. 2pp. tall folio, Mexico City, Nov. 16, 1865, two years before his death and with his power diminished, the Emperor states, in Spanish: "...In view of the heroic behavior of the Senior Officials, who carried out their duties in arms at Alamos against the Rosales Guerilla, We wish to award the following the rank of Commander of the Imperial Order of Guadalupe...". There follows lists of men who are divided into ranks within this prestigious order. Maximilian would be executed less than two years later. Signed on verso with a huge 4 1/2" signature. Light wear and chipping to margins, central fold with discrete tape reinforcement, very good condition.
