Description:

KARL MAUSS (1898 - 1959) German general, brilliant commander of the 7th Panzer Div. And one of only 27 to receive the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Mauss fought with distinction in Russia, particularly at Kursk. Superb content war-date A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., June 4, 1943 in German to his son following his wounding at Kursk. In part: "...I was wounded in the region of Orel, and have been confined to the Wandbek Standart infirmary...But now I am much better again, and I hope to take to the field again shortly. I had 43 shrapnel fragments [?] in my hide...most of them are still there and will remain so...Heil Hitler and greeting... ". Mauss had attached a portrait of himself in uniform at lower-left. Now detached and present, it could easily be replaced on the letter. File holes at left margin, else very good. $300-500
