Description:

MAUD BALLINGTON BOOTH
(1865 - 1948) American religious leader, co-founder of the Volunteers of America and a founder of the P.T.A. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., New York, Dec. 7, 1898, to an unnamed correspondent, in part: "...I was so sorry that you were not in Chicago during my last visit. I did so want to tell you all about our plans and schemes for the prison work. We have found a most suitable House for our boys from Joliet, a large new roomy house on the outskirts of the city. We partly furnished it and I have placed in charge Officers whom I trained in my Hope Hall No: 1 in this City. Major McClaughsy, the Warden is enthusiastically with us...We shall have room for over 40 men at a time...I raised about $1800 while I had hoped to leave General [Edward] Fielding with enough not only to furnish the Home, but to maintain it during the first year...I have twelve promises of one dollar per month and one of $10 per month. A few more like sums would easily meet this obligation. Could you dear friend help me by being one to promise $10 (ten dollars) per month?...I do not want the financing of the Prison work to be a burden on General Fielding for he has already so much responsibility in connection with other branches of Volunteer work...the men are giving every proof of determination to do right...". Light wear at folds, otherwise in very good condition. Territorial Major General Edward Fielding (1861-1921) was a vital force in both the Salvation Army and the Volunteers of America organizations.
