MATUS CERNAK (1903-1955) Slovakian ambassador to the Third Reich, assassinated by letter bomb in Munich after the war. Good lot of nineteen pieces of correspondence to Cernak, including ten from notable Third Reich personalities. These include: ERNST BRAUWEILER (1889-1945) Head of the Foreign Press Offices in Goebbels' Propaganda Ministry, executed by the Russians at war's end. T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Berlin Dec. 10, 1941, thanking Cernak for a "Christmas surprise"; KARL MEGERLE (1894-1972) Propagandist who served as Goebbels' representative in Austria, and later as propaganda agent for Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop. Signature on a 3 1/2"x 5 1/2" card, offering Christmas and New Year's greetings; FRANZ MENDE, head of the social office of the "Deutsche Arbeitsfront" (German Labor Front"), or DAF. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Berlin Dec. 21, 1942, untranslated; ERICA PAPPRITZ (1893-1972) Head of the Acceptance and Training Department for the Foreign Office, later a high-ranking official in the Adenauer government. A.L.S., 2pp 8vo., Berlin, Dec. 2, 1940, untranslated; ERICH SCHNEYDER, prominent Berlin journalist. Signature and inscription on a 3 3/4" x 6" card transmitting New Year's greetings; HEINRICH SCHARPE (1899-1977) Center Party politician, arrested by the Gestapo, later a journalist operating in Rome, Prague and Berlin. A.L.S., 1p. oblong 12mo., Berlin, Dec. 30, 1939, untranslated; GUSTAV ADOLPH VON HALEM (1899-1999), diplomat and SS colonel who served as Minister Plenipotentiary to the Italian Social Republic and ambassador to Portugal. Initials in black ink on a 2" x 3 1/4" calling card; FRITZ VON TWARDOWSKI (1890-1970) Diplomatic Counselor to Moscow, and later to Istanbul, suspected of having connections to the July 20 assassination plot due to correspondence with resistance member Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Pair of T.L.S.'s, both 1p. 4to., Berlin the first, Dec. 23, 1939, and the second Dec. 18, 1942, both transmitting Christmas greetings; WILFRIED PLATZER (1909-1981) Legation Council for the Foreign Office, ambassador to the U.S. and Great Britain postwar. T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Berlin, Dec. 10, 1941, a thank-you note on behalf of him and his wife; HANS STRACK (1899-1987) Diplomatic counsel to Hungary, postwar ambassador to Chile, where he attempted to thwart the extradition of war criminal Walter Rauff. A.L.S, 1p. 8vo., Berlin, Dec. 10, 1941, untranslated. The remaining pieces were sent by individuals unknown to us, including an "Oberstleutnant Loebisch" of the Abwehr. Several pieces show staple marks or file holes, else generally very good. Most untranslated by us, worthy of further research.
