Description:

MATTHEW CLARKSON
(1758-1825) American Revolutionary War soldier and politician, present at the surrender of Burgoyne and Cornwallis, and the defense of Charleston. Scarce A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., New York, Apr. 10, 1822, to President James Monroe, informing him of the death of his Military Store Keeper. In part: "...It is with sincere regret that I communicate to you the death of Genl. [Aquila] Giles which took place yesterday morning. This event so afflictive in itself to his distressed widow & family whose chief support was derived from the salary attached to the Generals office of Military Store Keeper in this District...I beg leave to mention to you that might be available in some degree to alleviate their unfortunate destitute situation. The circumstance I allude to is, that the duties of this office have for a length of time been performed by his son George Washington Giles...a young gentleman possessing a good character...It would be highly Sir to many of his friends to see this worthy son of the old Revolutionary Officer to take the place of his lamented father...". Aquila Giles (1758-1822) joined the Continental Army, rising in the ranks to General. Weakened folds split at margins, still very good condition.
