Description:

MATHILDE LUDENDORFF
(1877 - 1966) German psychiatrist, wife of Gen. Erich Ludendorff (1865-1937) who, with Hindenburg in World War I, was responsible for the defeat of Russia, and who later joined forces with Hitler in the Beer Hall Putsch. Together, the couple founded the 'Society for the Knowledge of God', an esoteric group of theists banned from 1961 to 1977. A collection of three T.L.S.s, each 1p. varying sizes, all from Tutzing, Germany, varying dates, only one of which is addressed (to Col. Maximillian Kemmerich). Only one letter bears more than a single line, in part: ‘...You are one of those who sent me a special donation in order to save the memorial in Tutzing, before a creditor seized it...In addition, the donations which had been requested flowed in very rapidly, and the Association for Knowledge of God took a small mortgage on the house...The great majority knew well enough that, in any case, my mode of dealing with this stroke of fate was, is and will be in accord with the moral code of my work, even if I have not explained in detail to you how this situation had arisen...It is laid down in my legally attested ‘last will and testament' that my house is to be, and to remain, a memorial...This will remove all erroneous assumptions. Thus, our movement – and this is what I fervently hope – will not have the slightest damage to put on record...' Per usual she adds ‘Long live freedom!' before signing her name at the conclusion. With original envelope. Accompanied by English translations for all three pieces and a small eight-page pamphlet advertising her work.
