MASSACHUSETTS BAY PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON IVORY ?Late 18thcentury-Federalist period well-executed oil on ivory of a lady showing her in ablue dress with fancy white-fringed neck trim, red shawl and with a red book inher hand, originating from the Winslow family, one of the earliest families incolonial Massachusetts Bay. This miniature may be of Ellen or Susanna Winslow,depicted after their death. The miniature is in an early frame with the hangingdevice being the thistle and rose which signifies the unification of Scotlandand England in 1603. The oval painting, which measures 2 1/2" wide and 3" tall,came from the family of Orlando Winslow whose ancestor Kenelm Winslow came toPlymouth in 1629. Kenelm Winslow was the brother of Edward Winslow, husband ofSusanna Winslow. Kenelm Winslow's wife was Ellen Winslow. The earlier photosthat accompany this lot are from the family of Orlando Winslow. Early gravemarkers are shown in other photographs, as well as a silver candle snuffer thatbelonged to the family. The style of dress and hairstyle of the dates the imageto 1780-1820. The colors remain vivid, and the only fault is a small hairlinefissure that is stable to the left edge, not affecting the details of the lady.$800 - 1,200
