Description:

An ornate ceremonial sword of a member of the Masonic Knight's Templar, 30 in. blade and 37 in. overall, likely late 19th century, with a knight's head-shaped pommel and a white imitation ivory grip made of celluloid. On one side the grip bears the owner's initials set inside a wreath while the other side displays a Templar cross. The silver crossguard has notable oxidation and sits just a bit loose, but the elaborate detail is still rather eye-catching, showing a filigree design, two Templar crosses on either end, and the depiction of a noble knight in full armor. The blade is acid etched with attractive Templar motifs, filigree designs, and the name William I. La Fon, a gold background under the etching. At the ricasso is the maker mark for the Ames Sword Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The blade is housed within an elaborately designed nickel-plated scabbard, displaying several Templar crosses including a red cross surrounded by the motto 'In Hoc Signo Vinces' ('In this sign thou shalt conquer'), raised depictions of knights with their right arms folded over their chest, and the name of the owner is again etched at the top, with three hangers. Oxidation is the same as seen on the crossguard and pommel, still a beautifully crafted sword.
