Description:

MASAHARU HOMMA
(1887 - 1946) Japanese general in charge of the invasion of the Philippines and the infamous Bataan 'Death March'. Homma also ordered the bombing of Manila after the declaration that it was an 'open' city. Executed for war crimes following a military trial. Rare 'short snorter', a Philippines 'Victory'-series one peso note, circa 1946, signed boldly by Homma on the recto in black ink. Shows folds and minor wear associated with circulation, else very good. Also present are two period photographs: an American press copy of a Japanese photo, 8" x 10" b/w, depicting Homma coming ashore at Luzon during the 1941 invasion of the Philippines, with typed caption on the verso; and a rare Japanese photo, 7.75 x 5.5 in. b/w, depicting U.S. General Jonathan Wainwright negotiating the surrender of Bataan and Corregidor with Homma, affixed to a 10.25 x 7.25 in. mount, with a Japanese caption affixed to the verso and a red ink 'chop' stamp at lower left. Both very good. Three pieces.
