Description:

MARY CASSATT
(1844-1926) American painter and printmaker, exhibited in Paris with the Impressionists, renowned for her images of women and children. Very rare, fine content A.L.S. ‘Mary Cassatt' 2pp. 12mo. [Paris], Jan. 21 [n.y.], in French on her imprinted ‘10, Rue de Marignan' correspondence card to her niece Jeanne Pontillon, the daughter Edma Morisot, Impressionist Berthe Morisot's older sister and the wife of Edouard Manet's brother, Eugene. She thanks Jeanne for something related to St. Paul, then continues: ‘…Degas' exhibition opens on the 26th and Mme. [Louisine] Havemeyer will send me newspaper clippings…'. Fine condition. Cassatt had a long-standing and important relationship with art collector Louisine Elder Havemeyer (1855-1929), whom she first met at the famous salon of Madame del Sartre in Paris. Cassatt was 16 years old at the time and introduced Havemeyer to a pastel by Degas, urging her to buy it. The work of Degas and other Impressionists utterly captivated Havemeyer and, with Cassatt's help as advisor, became the start of a truly incredible collection of Impressionist works that included 44 Courbets, 28 Monets, over 100 pieces by Degas, and 20 works by Cassatt herself. Cassatt continued to act as an advisor for Havemeyer after she married Henry Osburne Havemeyer, a sugar refinery tycoon who happily funded his wife's passion. Throughout her lifetime, Cassatt helped the couple build their art collection, facilitated relationships with other Impressionist artists and made several pastels of Louisine and their children. Jeanne Pontillon is perhaps best remembered as the subject of her aunt Berthe Morisot's acclaimed painting ‘Portrait of Jeanne Pontillon' (1894).
