Description:

(1819-1866) Confederate major general, one of the few Northern-born officers to serve in the Confederate Army. He planned and constructed the defenses of Vicksburg, and was held as a prisoner of war after that city was captured. After his exchange, he briefly served as head of the Engineer Corps for the entire Confederate Army. Rare association A.L.S. "M.L. Smith", 1p. 8vo., Vicksburg, July 13, 1863, to Union general James B. McPherson. Smith, writing just days after the fall of Vicksburg while in Union custody, requests some leniency in the terms of his captivity, in full: "During the few days that the execution of [Confederate] Lt Genl [John C.] Pemberton's order may render it necessary for me to remain in this city, I would be pleased to have your consent for myself and members of my staff to pass to and from my quarters after dark until 1/2 past 11 o'clock at night without being considered as violating any order in force. This request has reference purely to social intercourse with our friends here, and will, if granted, be in no respect abused." He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Maj Genl". Slightly ragged at the left edge, laid down on a paper backing, else very good.
