Description:

An excessively rare, historic piece of African American history, a 4pp. octavo program for the August 28, 1963 headed "MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR JOBS AND FREEDOM", the march at which Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his historic "I Have a Dream" speech before the Lincoln Memorial. The first page of the program sets forth the schedule of events, including the National Anthem sung by Marian Anderson, a tribute to "Negro Women Fighters for Freedom" by the widow of Medgar Evers, speeches by Roy Wilkins and King, and more. At bottom appears the slogan "WE SHALL OVERCOME". Within, the program bears a statement by the heads of the ten organizations organizing the march (including King) calling for calm during the march and peaceful resistance to provocation. There also appears a list of "WHAT WE DEMAND" including broadened civil rights legislation, school desegregation, job training, a minimum wage, and so on. The back of the program bears a diagram of the route of the march, from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. Very fine condition. This document is cited as one of America's one hundred most important documents, included within the book "Our Documents" (Oxford Univ. Press, 2003). The documents included in the collection were chosen by a team of historians, curators and archivists, and their choices are approved by John W. Carlin, Archivist of the United States.
