Description:

MARTIN GOTTFRIED WEISS
(1905 - 1946) Commandant of Dachau concentration camp in 1945 at the time of his arrest. He also served from April 1940 until September 1942 as the commandant of Neuengamme concentration camp, and from November 1943 until May 1944, as the fourth commandant of Majdanek death camp. Executed for war crimes. Very rare T.L.S. as Commandant of Majdanek on "Waffen-SS Konzentrationslager Lublin" letterhead, 1p. 4to., Lublin, Mar. 14, 1944 to Otto Bornmann. In part: "...Your daughter reported sick on 21st Feb. 1944 and was consequently taken into medical treatment with simultaneous admission to sickbay. She was provided with the best possible treatment in terms of medication and care. Despite all applied medical efforts, it was not possible to overcome the illness. I express my condolences for your loss. Your daughter did not express any last wishes. I have ordered the prisoners' property administration of my camp to send the personal effects...". Folds and some soiling, largely at margins, else very good. These letters were common for political prisoners and were often followed by another letter informing that the prisoners ashes will be sent home (usually for a charge). Concentration Camp Lublin is now officially known as Majdanek and is on the outskirts of the city of Lublin in Eastern Poland.
