Description:

(1900 - 1945) One of Hitler's closest confidants and his personal secretary after 1943, he remained in the bunker with Hitler until his leader's death, likely killed attempting to escape the Fuhrerbunker. Fine content and association war-date T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Munich, Feb. 25, 1944, to ALBERT SPEER (1905-1981), architect and Minister of Armaments and War Production, convicted of war crimes at Nuremburg, regarding construction in the city of Linz. In full: '...Architect Schatz reported to the Fuhrer yesterday about the Linz home constructions and that up to now 1600 homes are practically completed. As the housing shortage in Linz is particularly acute, the reasons for which you are aware, the Fuhrer wishes you to investigate the facts, and that you will finish them as soon as possible.' File holes to the left margin, else fine. The 'shortage' that Bormann mentions is referring to Hitler's grand architectural plans of building 'Fuhrer cities.' In 1937, along with his team of German architects, Hitler designated five cities to undergo dramatic urban transformation projects that would highlight the power of the Reich, including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Nuremberg, and Linz. Linz was especially dear to Hitler as he spent his youth there and planned it to be his retirement destination after the war. Since it was also the home of Hitler's favorite composer, Anton Bruckner, he envisioned turning the city into a German center of culture and art greater than any other city on the Danube, included Vienna which he hated. His plans involved expanding the city to three or four times its size, hence the 'housing shortage', and building ambition projects such as new Nazi party building, Olympic stadium, and a personal estate and crypt for Hitler.
