Description:

1154. GEORGE PERKINS MARSH (1801-1882) American politician and linguist, thought by some to be the first American environmentalist. Fine content A.L.S. "G. P. Marsh", 2pp. 4to., Burlington, Aug. 9, 1843, to Albert Whittemore, in part: "...For some days it has been rumored that Mr. [William] Slade was not disposed to resign his `claims' to a re-election to Congress, and the reports were partially confirmed by himself in the course of the last week... He states that the nomination in the...paper was made without his knowledge or consent, but that many of his old personal friends...insisted that he should consent to receive their votes, and that, by publicly withdrawing, he should expose himself to the suspicion of bargaining for promotion to the senate and thus alienate those friends...I cannot help feeling that Mr. S. intends to defeat the election and then, if he finds that his chance of success at another trial is none of the best, to make his magnanimity in declining the foundation for a claim to succeed Judge Phelps in the Senate... " William Slade (1786-1859), was a Representative for Vermont, and, at the time of this letter, was reporter of decisions of the State Supreme Court. Marsh served along with him on the Court until 1849, which explains his deep interest in the vagaries of Slade's politics. A seal-tear on verso, not affecting text, overall very good. $75-100
