Description:

Fascinating pair of German passports belonging to Jewish husband-and-wife Hugo and Recha Walz, each marked with a large, red 'J' on the first interior page and bearing their still affixed portraits on the second page. The passports, marked with the serial numbers '04127' and '04128' respectively, were both issued on the same day: March 5, 1940 in Munich. The documents indicate that Hugo was born on Aug. 11, 1897, while his wife was born August 6, 1898. The travel stamps within demonstrate the couple's numerous attempts to flee Germany for the United States, as their application for a one-time visa in August 6, 1940 has been marked 'INVALID'. Later pages show visas issued to them from the Consulates of Spain and Portugal just one month later, then documents their travel through Spain and Portugal, later bearing an embarkment stamp from Lisbon to New York on Sept. 18, 1940. Interestingly, Hugo was near certainly a veteran of the First World War, as his passport includes a folded scan of an original award document issued to him for the Honor Cross of the World War 1914/1918. Very good condition overall.
