MARK CLARK
(1896 - 1984) American general, commanded the landings at Salerno and Anzio against the forces of Kesselring. Fine association T.L.S. 'Mark' on 'Chief, Army Field Forces' letterhead, 1p. 4to., Fort Monroe, Va., Nov. 29, 1950, to Lt. Gen. CLARENCE HUEBNER (1888-1972), the American general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division, popularly known as the 'Big Red One', during and after the D-Day landings. Clark writes his old comrade upon the latter's retirement, in small part: '...The justifiable pride with which you reflect upon your more than forty years of distinguished service is shared by the entire army...Few men have had the honor of serving in all ranks in our army from private to lieutenant general and to have served in each with distinction is a tribute...you are entitled to rest and relaxation. You take with you...the gratitude of our nation and the esteem and best wishes of your friends...' Fine.
