Description:

MARINES INSPECT AN ‘OHKA' SUICIDE AIRCRAFT ON OKINAWA
A rare unpublished original photograph, 4.5 x 2.75 in b/w, depicting a group of six U.S. Marines examining a captured Japanese Yokosuka MXY-7 ‘Ohka' suicide aircraft on a maintenance cradle beneath camouflage netting. The aircraft is numbered ‘I-18' along with a cherry blossom symbol on the forward fuselage; other photos of this particular aircraft place it at Kita Airfield on Okinawa, shortly after the capture of that Japanese island by U.S. forces in the spring of 1945. Shows some creases, otherwise in very good overall condition. The ‘Ohka', nicknamed ‘Baka' ('Fool') by American troops, was a purpose-built kamikaze aircraft for use against Allied ships. During the Okinawa campaign, Ohkas sank the destroyer USS MANNERT L. ABELE and damaged three additional ships beyond repair. The aircraft shown in this photo, I-18, was transported to the United States for technical evaluation, and for display during war bond drives. It was purchased by the Planes of Fame Air Museum in 1950, and was displayed at their Grand Canyon facility until its closure in 2023.
