Lot 594
MARILYN MONROE & ARTHUR MILLER A unique set of three candid, unpublished photographs, taken by an amateur photographer during a reception honoring Arthur Miller's award of a gold medal from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1959. The photographs, each 6 1/2" x 5 1/2", b/w, illustrate a very crowded reception with all eyes on the celebrity couple. Though Miller was the one being honored, judging from the faces in the crowd, it was his wife who was the center of attention. Miller appears quite detached and stoic in one image, while the other two (which may be two versions from the same negative with different orientations) appear to show Miller looking upon his wife with a slight smile. We have been unable to positively identify other members of the crowd except for whom we believe to be Katherine Cornell, appearing to the left of Monroe in the oblong image, sipping champagne. The photographs were taken by the father of the consignor who lost the negatives to the photographs while moving to California some years ago. One photo bears a few minor creases, another bears a small loss in the bottom blank margin, otherwise very good condition. $1,000-1,200
