Description:

MARIE JOSEPH, MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE
(1757 - 1834) French statesman and military officer who served as a major general under Washington and was instrumental in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. LAFAYETTE GAINS SUPPORTERS FOR "ANOTHER" REVOLUTION Manuscript L.S. "Lafayette", 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], in French. In part: "...Mr. Malibran came to me this morning my dear Viardot. He was asked for a meeting tomorrow. I didn''t know how to anser him. If you will check with our new friends tell me then I will announce to him the next visit...". Chips and mounting remnants at two margins would all mat-out, an embossed collector''s stamp at top, light soiling, else very good. This letter, ca. 1830, mentions two close to Lafayette: "Malibran" was the husband of contralto Maria Malibran, who apparently sought to join Lafayette''s circle of plotters, including Louis Viardot, which sought to overthrow Charles X in the Revolution of 1830.
