Description:

(1757 - 1834) French statesman and military officer who served as a major general under Washington and was instrumental in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Good content A.L.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., La Grange, Jan. 4, 1829 to an unknown recipient, in French. In part: "...It would be difficult for me, Sir, to receive such a superb gift for the New Year without knowing where to direct my gratitude...please accept my thanks and new assurances of the value I place on your friendship...I would be pleased to express those feelings to you here, or in Paris...The opening of the [Chamber of Deputies] Session will bring me to Paris soon and if we can meet there we may be able to make some progress in the restoration of French liberty, which was so promising forty years ago!...". Some negligible blurring in places, else very good. Matted in maroon silk moire with two images of Lafayette and translation, set into a gilt frame. After the Bourbon Restoration of 1814, Lafayette became a liberal member of the Chamber of Deputies, a position that he held for most of the remainder of his life. He would advocate for the end of the reign of Charles X, which would ensure 18 months later.
