Description:

MARIE JOSEPH DE LAFAYETTE
(1757 - 1834) French statesman and military officer who served as a Major General under Washington and was instrumental in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Fine content A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., La Grange, Oct. 13, 1825, in English to William Tudor, Consul of the United States in Peru. In part: "...The testimonies of kindness and approbation which, on the shores of the Pacific [Lima, Peru, is on the Pacific], have been conferred upon me by American fellow citizens and on other Republican brethren have reached me before my departure from the United States...the more flattering indeed when the illustrious Liberator [Simon Bolivar] has been pleased to join in those marks of esteem and friendship, and when I find in the chair of the respected meeting the Gallant Commodore [Isaac] Hull, and recognize in the Secretary a friend, the son of my old friend Judge Tudor, far I am in having forgotten the times of our fine acquaintance...This letter will be delivered by Colonel Merche who is going directly to Lima, under American colours, on mercantile business...He has been an able and gallant officer in the Fr. Army...one among the best military patriots of France...". William Tudor had, while in the Massachusetts legislature, originated the idea of the present Bunker Hill monument. On June 17, 1825, while in the United States Lafayette laid the cornerstone of that monument. This letter was written from France shortly after Lafayette returned from his American tour. With separate integral address leaf, red wax seal and docket. Very good. Letters from Lafayette penned in English are rare and desirable.
