Lot 25
officer who served as a Major General under Washington and was instrumental in the defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., La Grange, Nov. 10, 1825 to Francis Henderson informing him that: "...in consequence of a previous investigation of your claims, you have only applied to me for what you are pleased to call a certificate of important diplomatic and military services; it now remains for me to send, in time for the Session of Congress, a tribute of my personal admiration, love, and patriotic gratitude for the character of my beloved friend and for the obligations which, as an American patriot, whatever bind me to his memory.. Not knowing whether you are now at Charleston, or on you way to Washington I take the liberty to entrust this letter to the kind care of the president, who I am sure, will be glad to forward a correspondence connected with the merits of one among the best citizens who have illustrated the American character. I request you will offer my affectionate good wishes to his grand son and believe me with great regard..." Regrettably we have been unable to determine the subject of Lafayette's tribute. Usual folds, with only a few minor pinholes, otherwise very good to fine condition.
