Description:

MARIANO MELGAREJO
(1820-1871) Career military officer during Bolivia's 19th century period of constant upheaval. Personally killed President Belzu to take power, which he held from 1864-1871. Excessively rare Head of State letter on his personal stationery with oversized, ornate lettering, 2pp., folio, La Paz, June 20, 1870, a letter to Peruvian President Jose Balta introducing Dr. Don Jose Antonio Garcia i Garcia. Boldly signed, "M Melgarejo" and countersigned by Melgarejo's chief of staff, MARIANO DONATO MUNOZ". Melgarejo was considered one of Bolivia's worst, most arrogant, and buffoonish leadeers: in addition to continually and violently suppressing Indian tribes, he once gave Brazil thousands of acres of land in exchange for a white horse he liked, and once insisted his army march to Paris, France, unaware of the Atlantic Ocean being a problem. Slight separations at top, with minor central folds and slight toning throughout. Evidence of mounting on top margin of verso, very good.
