Description:

(1717 - 1780) Archduchess of Austria and Queen of Hungary, lost Silesia and Austrian lands in Italy, allied herself with France bringing on the Seven Years War. Fine content manuscript D.S. 'Marie Therese', 2pp. large 4to., Vienna, Aug. 20, 1780 in French. Largely untranslated but apparently expresses her condolences upon the death of Prince Charles of Lorraine (1712-1780). Charles commanded the army of the Roman-German Emperor at the Battle of Prague, where he was defeated by Frederick the Great, but was able to inflict heavy casualties on the larger Prussian forces. He subsequently defeated a much smaller Prussian army in 1757 at the Battle of Breslau before being completely routed by Frederick the Great at the Battle of Leuthen, which is considered one of Frederick's most brilliant victories. During the battle, he was commander of the Imperial Army as appointed by Maria Theresa. Maria's document also refers to Maria Christina, Duchess of Teschen and Prince Albert of Saxony, her husband, the pair just appointed as joint governors of the Austrian Netherlands. Edge tears and some soiling, still very good.
