(1831-1922) Confederate brigadier general wounded at Shiloh and who returned to fight at Chickamauga and Atlanta. He later compiled the ‘Official Records of the Civil War'. War-date A.L.S. ‘Marcus J. Wright' 1p. 8vo., Atlanta, July 7, 1864, on letterhead of ‘Head Quarters Post, Atlanta, Georgia' to a doctor, in part: …I have received your note. In my hurried communication, I did not intend to say that I should order the Bunks left. I suggested it to you for your opinion for the reason that the Transportation Quartermaster informed me that the number of Bunks to be transported was very great, & that probably more important stores ought to be shipped. I respectfully suggest that you take steps to prevent any private or unnecessary furniture from going with the Hospitals as shall if pressed be compelled to abandon valuable stores…'. At the time of this letter, Wright was in charge of the district of Atlanta and, not two days later, would see the start of the first battle of Petersburg on July 9. Bleed-through at top left from ink docket on verso, otherwise very good. WITH: a secretarially-signed A.N.S. of Confederate General Albert Blanchard, 1p. 8vo., Portsmouth, June 11, 1861, on Head Quarters Military Division letterhead to a Capt. Belcher in Hargrove, asking him to come to the office on ‘important business'. Two pieces.
